Crochet Pattern: Lady Mary Coasters

These coasters, decorated with simple black beads, have actually become real favourites around our house. The beads add a little drama, and because they’re crocheted into the coaster, rather than being sewn on later, they’re a lot safer to have around Squirm.

I’d never crocheted with beads before this, but I found it remarkably easy. It’s just a matter of threading the beads onto the yarn before you start crocheting with it, then pulling the bead into place when you crochet that particular stitch. This is a good pattern to practice with, since the bead placement doesn’t need to be 100% accurate.

I really wanted to include a chart with this pattern, but it turns out my old scanner does not work with my new laptop. I’m still thinking on that, but hopefully my instructions will be enough to help this time.

I’ve also included both US and UK terminology

What do you need?

Yarn: Small amounts of black and jewel colours. I used Carnival Soft 8 ply
Hook: 5mm
Other things: Yarn needle, 8 black beads (big enough to be threaded using the yarn needle), scissors

• Magic circle

• single crochet (sc) [uk = double crochet (dc)]

Crochet (US Terminology)

Row 1 – (start with colour yarn) Make a magic circle, ch 3, dc 11 into the circle (making 12) ss to close, change to black yarn (12)

Row 2 – (Working between the stitches) ch 1, sc 2 in each space between the dc, ss to close (24)

Row 3 – *ch 6, skip 2, sc in next stitch, repeat from * (8 loops)

Row 4 – ch 3, dc in same stitch, *ch 2, dc in middle of ch 6 loop, ch 2, dc 2 in sc between loops, repeat from *, ss to close, change to coloured yarn which has 8 beads threaded on it

Row 5 – ss to be inbetween 2 dcs, ch 3, dc in same spot, dc with bead (pulling bead into place when making the last loop) in same spot, dc 2 in same spot, ch 3, sc in single dc, ch 3, * [dc 2, dc with bead, dc 2] in between dc 2, ch 3, sc in single dc, ch 3, repeat from *, ss to close

Weave in any ends, make a cup of tea or coffee and enjoy!

Crochet Pattern: Lady Edith Coasters

With our baby son, Squirm, now able to pull himself up on furniture, we soon realised what things in our house were not baby friendly. Among them were our lovely wooden coasters, which unfortunately had bark on the side – bark which Squirm was soon trying to consume. So obviously we needed some new coasters for our cups of tea, so where better to look than the tea consuming inhabitants of Downton Abbey!

Those of you who are Downton Abbey fans will know of poor, sometimes neglected Edith. The middle sister, without her older sister’s talent for ruthlessness (she can be ruthless, she’s just not as good at it) or her younger sister’s good naturedness. So a granny-square coaster seemed perfect. Slightly unfashionable, prim and a little dour, with just the occasional splash of colour.

For an extra special bonus, I’ve written this pattern in both US and UK terms!

Downloadable Pattern: Lady Edith Coasters

WHAT DO YOU NEED?

Yarns – 8 ply/DK Weight, small amounts of grey (colour 1), cream (colour 2) and colour of choice (colour 3) (I used pinks and brown)
Hooks -4mm
Other stuff – scissors

Notes

• If you are a more experienced crocheter, this works up as a basic granny square, with slight changes for the third and sixth row.
• I have included pictures for each row, though in a different colour combination. Although Lady Edith’s colours are quite tame, the coasters work out beautifully in a range of colours

CROCHET (US terminology)

Use grey yarn (colour 1)
Chain 4, ss to close the loop

Row 1 – ch 3 (counts as 1st dc), dc 11 into loop, ss into the third ch, change to cream yarn (colour 2)

Row 2 – ch 3 (counts as 1st dc), dc 2 between stitches, ch 1, *skip 3, (dc 3, ch 1, dc 3) between stitches, ch 1. Repeat from * two more times, skip 3, dc 3, ch 1 in original space, ss to close, change to coloured yarn (colour 3)

Row 3 – ch 1, sc around the whole square with 2 sc in each corner, ss to close, change to grey yarn (colour 1)

Row 4 – ch 3 (counts as 1st dc), dc 2 in the corner made in row 2 (over row 3), *ch 1, dc 3 into next space made in row 2, ch 1, (dc 3, ch 1, dc 3) into next corner made in row 2,  repeat from * two more times, ch 1, dc 3 in next space, ch 1, dc 3 in original corner, ch 1, ss to close, change to cream yarn (colour 2)

Row 5 – repeat Row 4, but crochet 3 dcs into both spaces on each side (so corner, side, side, corner), change to colour yarn (colour 3)

Row 6 – ch 1, (sc, dc, sc) on top of each group of 3 dc, ss in spaces (2 ss in corners), ss to close, fasten off
